Catoosa County DV Murder

Catoosa County in Northwest Georgia had their first murder of the year on Halloween night. It involved domestic violence.

A woman was killed and a man was wounded Saturday night on East State Line Road in Catoosa County.

According to sheriff Phil Summers:

Deputies went to the residence about 8:11 p.m. in response to a report of shots fired. They found a white male who had been shot in the arm and a white female lying on the living room floor who had been shot in the chest.

The suspect, Terry L. Hagan, was the estranged husband of the female victim, who has been identified in news reports as Lisa Hagan.

Terry Hagan is alleged to have gone to the incident location and confronted the male victim in the front yard with a .22-caliber revolver, shooting him in the arm. Hagan then allegedly entered the residence and shot Lisa Hagan in the chest.

He is being held in the Catoosa County Detention Facility charged with murder and aggravated assault.

This is the first homicide in Catoosa County this year.

I've been working around children at a local private school. I am appalled to learn how seriously some are impacted by the daily physical, verbal, and emotional violence they witness in their homes. Even without any verbal "report" or complaint, it's frighteningly easy to read a child's face in the morning, especially when they've just left a house where loud arguing, hitting, threats, and danger are the NORM. It can ruin my day, but for those children, it ruins their LIVES.
Please continue your good work so all our children and their mothers and fathers can live and grow in peace and safety. They deserve no less!

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is the establishment of control and fear in a relationship through physical, sexual, emotional, and/or financial abuse. Both men and women are capable of misusing power and perpetrating violence, and male victims are often just as afraid to call the police. More resources for female survivors exist, however, because overwhelmingly women and children suffer the most severe consequences (medical, legal, social, and financial) and therefore require the most intensive interventions.

Many women choose to stay in abusive relationships because they do not want their relationship to end...just the violence. Women often remain in, or return to, abusive relationships because their partners threaten to harm them and their loved ones if they attempt to leave. Commonly, women choose to leave when they become convinced that their life is at risk, or that their children are in danger.

Domestic violence is not just a "family matter". The violence will not stop until men and women come together with a common attitude of non-tolerance. We must speak out for those who may not feel safe speaking up, and our children must learn through our words and example that violence is never justified.
